How bad are carbs really? I have been researching low carb meals and I'm having a tough time finding decent ones. I love bread and pasta. Is it really necessary to eliminate them?

wow, off to a nice start.

i'll admit, i've cut bread and pasta from my diet, but the reason is because i've read they are bad for me. i haven't done an a/b sort of test with those 2. my understanding is white bread is bad for you do to the refining process, all the goodness is refined out of the wheat.

these days, i'd tend to think bread is ok in moderate portions, just like most anything.

oh and re: carbs in general.

imo, it's extremely unhealthy to eliminate carbs from the diet for more than a very short period of time. the reason low carb diets cause weight loss is primarily due to the overall decrease in calories, not from eliminating carbs.

a balanced diet(eating plan) is always the best way to go.

perhaps some gfy experts can reply with experience but from what i've read, you need to consume that with plenty of your own urine for it to be effective.

you'd be surprised. I think they taste great.. the bar b que and salt and vinegar are the only two flavors i tried and they are good.

of course not as good as reg chips, but for eating healthier, they are a great substitute.

from what i've read, trans fats should be no more than 1% of your total caloric consumption.

figure, what, 10-15g trans fat in a rib eye, 1x/week. that's ~120 cals trans fat/week. if you consume a typical 2000 cals/day = 14,000 cals/week * 1% = 140 cals

There are many healthy people that live on low carb diets permanently, so there are two sides to this debate on whether you should eat carbs at all or not. Read up about ketogenic diets (65% fat, 30% protein and 5% carbohydrates usually). These diets burn the most amount of body fat out of all diets, because once you are in ketosis your body uses fat as its immediate fuel instead of carbs. It's a great way to shed fat quickly, but most likely you will lose a little muscle doing so. Bodybuilders frequently use this diet to shed fat once they plateau out below 10% body fat. A keto diet will continue to burn fat when other diets fail.

Overall if you're an active person, it's easier to use a diet with enough carbs to fuel you throughout the day and then cut them off at night. Keto diets tend to tire most people out and maintaining ketosis can be hard.

Examples of good carbs: Vegetables, brown rice, oatmeal, sweet potatoes, whole wheat bread (be careful of breads containing high fructose corn syrup) and whole wheat pasta. Fruits are also good in the earlier part of the day, but they will spike your insulin.

Basically, your protein intake should be constant throughout the day. You should vary calories by increasing or decreasing carbs; and a carb cutoff at night is a great way to lose extra fat. Essential fats should be a part of your diet as well.

There is a lot to write on the topic of nutrition and even more opinions on the subject, but a healthy diet is fairly easy to accomplish with a little bit of will power.

i've done the keto diet. i know first hand how unhealthy it is long term.

it's not healthy in the slightest.

Why is Nero unhealthy long-term? If you're having 1-2 Carb ups a week you can do it long-term. In fact this is one of the only diets you can do long-term.

a carb load every 3 days would help offset the issues but a pure ketogenic diet isn't healthy long term for several reasons.

1. it's a huge stress on the liver
2. the risk of going ketoacidotic (spilling ketones into the urine which is the primary issue for diabetics)
3. the imbalance of nutrients, a ketogenic diets requires supplementation with vitamins and nutrients missing in the diet, ketogenic diet means extremely little to no fruits, vegetables, calcium rich foods, etc.

it's a controversial diet that is used for weight loss but originally designed to treat epilepsy in children.

i don't see the reason to maintain it long term in light of the issues and when a solid, balanced diet is perfectly fine.

jack3d is a great pre/wo supplement. i took it for 2 months. but while it gave me focus and amped me up for a wo, it didn't give me the pump other NO's did such as superpump250 or black powder. and the pump is what it's all about, right? arnold says it's better than sex. i wouldn't go that far but i am still sorting out how to get the pump.

isn't that the principle behind the ckd? thus the cycle? it's been a few months and i don't want to come across as an expert on it but it's my understanding the ketogenic diet does not include carb loading days while the ckd does.

Yea you're right my mistake, there's TKD and CKD.. The only difference between TKD and Atkins is Atkins allows you to eat as many calories as you want while TKD makes you eat below maintenance. But yea, I'm on CKD and CKD is very healthy because you DO get that carb up.

Here's what I do for one of my carb meals:

Non-lifting Days:

By the way Dyna, what protein shake do you use? I use to use All The Whey, then it went out of stock here (UK) so I started on Scivation. Scivation is really yummy in both Choc and Strawberry. Problem is, it's out of stock too and I'm looking for something to replace it. It needs to taste great and have a good profile (low card, low fat). Any suggestions?

The best tasting overall would have to be Myofusion. The lipotropic proteins are just disgusting. The Optimum Nutrition is the standard for perfect protein. Right now I'm using Dymatize Chocolate/Chocolate PB. I bought a 10lb back on bodybuilding.com for $64.99. That's a sick deal. I want my protein to taste great which dymatize does, but I don't want to pay an arm and a leg for it. All The Whey is expensive. Also the best tasting protein I've ever tried was the Isopure Banana Cream. It was like a banana split.

I was getting a great deal (by UK standards) on All The Whey and it had a great taste. I have a tub of dymatize in my cupboard with just one serving used (toffee cream) and it's going to stay that way coz it tastes horrible. It has a very chalky taste to it. Scivation is excellent in profile and in taste and the next time it comes available I'm buying about 4 or 5 10lb tubs!

i'm with the demon, i like myofusion a lot, sometimes i will go with syntha-6 and occasionally i will use 50% hemp protein. The myofusion is a great price (~$40 at amazon for 5 pounds) the banana and chocolate/peanut butter are my 2 fav flavors. in fact, i think gaspari nutriton makes several good products, myo being one of them.

i don't have any experience with salba. it seems similar to chia seeds, which i eat a lot of daily. lot's of fiber and omega 3's and a few other nutrients. perhaps someone here who consumes salba can reply with info..........

i do consume hemp protein, but have not eaten hemp hearts. hemp, in it's various forms has some good nutrients, protein, etc. the problem is the taste. it really tastes bad and needs to be covered up with something that tastes good. I don't know if the hemp hearts have this same issue or not though.

heat will certainly impact the nutrition content of foods. it's best to avoid high heat for extended periods. re: veg soup, the nutrients will transfer to the broth if they are not lost to high heat so i would suggest cooking at a low simmer for as short of time as possible and consume the broth as well as the vegetables.

Salba is White Chia seeds ... that have been grown under the strictest controls in the nutrient rich soil of Peru ... Basically the info you have provided matches their claims ... so it sounds like they may be the real deal.

As for the Hemp Hearts, you really should try them! They are slow roasted, and have a taste very similar to walnuts! I love to eat them with peanut butter on toast, and sometimes even sprinkle some cinnamon on it too!

Having consumed my fair share of pot cookies/brownies as a kid, I was hesitant about the taste too, but I was REALLY pleasantly surprised!! They can very easily be eaten straight from the package with no masking agent!

ON is amazing in taste. Both the Vanilla and Cookies N Cream are fantastic. Dymatize has amazing chocolate and chocolate BP. Scivation is too expensive. And I wouldn't touch protein bars with the amount of shit they actually have in them. In America, AllTheWay is expensive. I might start looking at Isopure because of it having no carbs but it's also mad expensive.

hah! too funny eh. i didn't know salba = white chia seeds lol. good to know. i replaced my fish oil pill with chia seeds a few months ago and enjoy eating them. + they hold 8x their weight of water so they contribute significantly to hydration by slowing the time it takes for h20 to pass through the digestive system, all around a terrific food.

i'll pick up some hemp hearts at whole foods later today and give em a whirl, thanks for the suggestion and comments!

Yeah, I have a question that's been bugging the hell out of me. Aside from a three month hiatus due to being pissed at the rates my former gym was charging (before getting a new membership at a cheaper place this month), I have spent the past 15 months working out about 2 times per week.

I normally just do strength training and cardio. I'm 5'9" and I have not gained or lost weight since I started. I'm about 220 (I swing between 215-220 normally). As far as the bullshit BMI goes, I'm considered to be a land barge. However, I comfortably wear 36 jeans, and although I do have some stomach fat that needs trimming away, I'm by no means "fat".

I've increased my upper body muscle mass and definition considerably, and improved my cardio shape, but I still weigh in like I'm made of cinder blocks. UFC fighters who are my height, and have twice as much muscle as I do weight in at 180.

My question is, where the FUCK is this FORTY pounds? Is it really all fat?
